Obituary for Jerry Robert Wempe

Seneca – Jerry R. Wempe, 80, of Meadowbrook neighborhood in Seneca, passed away peacefully at the Cottingham Hospice House on Monday, June 17, 2019.

Jerry was born on March 10, 1939 in the small town of Enid, OK to Lillis and Hazel Wempe. As the son of an Air Force Veterinarian and Social Worker, he moved around frequently attending fourteen schools before graduating high school in Massachusetts. He graduated from Clemson Agricultural College, majoring in English. While attending Clemson, he was active on the swim team and with ROTC. Following in his father’s military footsteps, he joined the United States Air Force and served for seven years.

He met his wife, Molly, while they were both serving their country in Vietnam. They married on May 3, 1968 in Indiana and celebrated over fifty years of marriage together. Jerry and Molly raised four very unique and independent daughters, Beth, Kate, Amy and Meg. Having made Seneca his permanent home, he worked as a computer color programmer at JP Stevens and then retired from the US Postal Service where he was a rural carrier, a job he loved as he got to be out in the fresh air and meeting people every day. In his spare time, he was very active at his church, being a lector, eucharistic minister, and choir member. He enjoyed weekly Bible study at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church, swimming, and spending volunteer time with Hospice of the Foothills. Continuing his love of English and knowledge, he even taught illiterate patients to read as one of their last requests.

Survivors include his wife Molly, his four daughters, Beth Hinz (Dave), Kate Wempe (Andy Hinton), Amy Wempe, and Meg Wempe (Mark Wardell); and a younger brother, Ed Wempe.

A small private family service will be held to celebrate his life.
