Lewis was born on August 25, 1931 in Union, SC to John McKinley Stutts and Janie Brandon Stutts. He was the seventh of eleven siblings—six boys and five girls. He graduated from Newberry High School in 1950 where he excelled in sports. He was Captain of the 1950 State Championship Baseball Team, the Most Valuable Player of the 1950 Football Team, a member of the 1950 North South Game, and a member of the 1950 Carolina All-Star Baseball Team.

For three seasons from 1952-1954, Lewis played baseball professionally for scout teams in the Boston Red Sox organization. During his baseball career, Lewis made 854 plate appearances, had 221 hits, had 272 total bases earned, and averaged 3.19 total bases/at bat.
At the end of the 1954 baseball season, Lewis returned home to South Carolina. He attended the Police Academy, and in 1956 began his career with the South Carolina Highway Patrol where he served as a State Trooper for thirty-four years until his retirement in 1990. He was a lifetime member of the South Carolina Trooper’s Association. Lewis was also retired from the US Army where he faithfully served thirty-four years in the South Carolina National Guard as Sergeant First Class in the Twenty-first Signal Brigade. He was a member of the Hejaz Shriners, St. John’s Lodge, for the past 45 years.

He married the love his life, Delilah in 1976. Together, they raised one daughter, Rhonda. He was a generous and kind-hearted individual who loved spending time with family and friends, and who would go out of his way to help someone in need. Lewis was passionate about his Clemson Tigers and was a devoted lifetime fan. He was also an avid reader, and a member of Westminster Baptist Church.
