Obituary for Robert Krehl Whitney, Sr.

Robert Krehl Whitney, Sr., “Bear” of Westminster, SC, age 69, died on July 1, 2018 at his residence. He was born on January 22, 1949 to the late John Barry Whitney Jr. and Ruth Krehl Whitney. He is survived by his loving companion, Cornelia “Connie” Robinson; daughter, Ola Krehl Whitney Martin (Josh Martin) of Aiken, SC, and son, Robert Krehl Whitney Jr. (Hannah Hutchinson Whitney) of Cumming, GA, and their children Jessica, Carolina, Raeleigh, and Joshua Martin and Gavin Whitney. He is survived by the mother of his children, Barbara Brown Whitney; brothers, John Barry Whitney III (Beverly Whitney) of North Augusta, SC, and David Charles Whitney (Ellen Wartella) of Evanston, IL. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Stephen Whitney.

Robert grew up in Clemson, SC and attended Daniel High School. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts of America. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Clemson University in 1970 where he was on the senior staff of “The Tiger” newspaper and was the Editor in Chief of the “Chronicle” Literary Magazine. He then served in the AmeriCorps VISTA program (Volunteers in Service to America) in Miami, FL. Robert later earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1977 from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He opened a law firm in Seneca, SC and proudly served the people of Oconee County for 41 years. He greatly enjoyed helping others and he was most proud of receiving the South Carolina Pro Bono Publico Award several times. Robert was involved with many organizations throughout his career and also served as a Municipal Court Judge for the City of Westminster. Robert was a past master of the Westminster Masonic Lodge #200, a current member of the Blue Ridge Masonic Lodge #92, and the Hejaz Shrine Center.

He was “Papa Bear” to those who loved him the most: his children and grandchildren. He loved them fiercely and cherished his time with them whether he was cheering at their ball games, hiking with them to waterfalls, beating them at Yahtzee, or swimming with them at Oconee State Park. Robert loved nature, hunting, bowling, gardening, the Braves, the Clemson Tigers, his family, and helping others. Each year, he took great pride in growing and giving away hundreds of flowers and vegetables to his friends, family, and community through the Westminster Baptist Church Plant Exchange, Habitat for Humanity, and the Masonic Lodge.

A celebration service is planned for Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster, SC with a reception to follow in the Sandifer Funeral Home “Martin House”. Instead of bringing flowers, Robert would want people to spread the seeds of kindness and water it with affection. As dad would say, “Peace be with you.”
